Recognising Young Peoples' Contribution - The MV Award

Volunteer Action Dumfries & Galloway is the region's Volunteer Centre that promotes supports and develops quality volunteering experiences for all individual in Dumfries & Galloway, including young people.

As part of Volunteer Action's support and recognition of youth volunteering, Volunteer Action administers the MV Award in Dumfries & Galloway. The MV Award gives national recognition from the Scottish Government for their voluntary contribution for every 50, 100 and 200 hours that young people do. The 200 hour certificate is a certificate of excellence signed by First Minister, Alex Salmond.

Juanita Wilson, Co-ordinator, Mossburn Animal Centre has, in the past, taken on a MV Placement. Juanita said "We were delighted as an organisation to welcome in a young lady participating in the MV Award. Because young people choose to take part in this scheme they tend to be dedicated, hard working and reliable: Everything one would want, but not necessarily get, in the workplace! The MV Award is good CV material for the volunteer but the organisation offering the placement also benefits enormously from the young persons input, enthusiasm and fresh outlook."

Christine Clarke, Volunteer Action D&G added: "Participating in the MV Award is a great way to meet new people, strengthen your CV and open doors to further training and employment while being recognised by the Scottish Executive."

If you are a young person aged 16 -25 years old that would be interested in participating in the MV Award, or an organisation that would like to support and involve young people within your organisation., please contact 01387 267311 or admin@volunteeraction.co.uk

Volunteer Opportunities in Nithsdale

Alzheimer Scotland
An elderly woman is looking for a little companionship 1 or 2 hours per week to go out for walks and have coffee or odd runs in the car. These activities will help build her confidence and become more active in her community. She is very able and is really just looking for a bit of company to get her out of the house.
Awareness Training about living with dementia and Induction into the organisation is available.

REMAP
As a niche charity, REMAP needs engineers, craftsmen, model makers and DIY enthusiasts to help design and manufacture aids individually tailored to the needs of disabled clients when no suitable equivalent can be sources commercially.
Volunteers from local Panels visit clients, initially with an occupational therapist, discuss what they wish to achieve, assess disabilities and subsequently design/manufacture equipment to bridge the gap.
Those with workshops may well be able to carry out entire tasks alone, from initial client visit to equipment commissioning. Others, with more limited facilities, may work as a team to achieve the same end. However, the Panel meets monthly in Dumfries to meet colleagues and review cases. Attendance at some of the meetings would be beneficial.
Volunteers can choose which cases to take. Travel expenses refunded.

Food Train in Dumfries
If you have a few hours per week to spare, you could provide some basic office help for this expanding and successful organisation, which supports older people in their own homes. General duties include: photocopying, dealing with messages, updating delivery schedules and memberships and a little basic bookkeeping. Full ongoing office support is provided by the Development Officer. No experience is needed as everything can be learned, and time in the office can be flexible.
There is a two week trial period with an experienced volunteer, then a further two weeks supervised with on-going support.

For further information and other volunteering opportunities in Dumfries and Nithsdale please contact Volunteer Action on 01387 267311 or email admin@volunteeraction.co.uk

Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland is an independent medical charity which aims to improve the quality of life for people in Scotland affected by chest, heart and stroke illness. Volunteer Group Facilitators are required to assist at the Stranraer group, to offer essential communication support by encouraging members to participate in specific activity programmes, which are geared to stimulate and motivate all forms of communication. The level of each volunteer involvement is arranged to suit.

Volunteers are also needed to help out with general duties including poster distribution and fundraising. The branch is run entirely by volunteers and any help/support would be appreciated. If you can help out please get in touch.

Dumfries and Galloway Befriending Project is happy to announce the arrival of their provision in the Stranraer area. Shelter are a housing support charity that helps thousands of people a year get back on their feet, fight for their rights and find and keep a home. An essential part of supporting clients with the resettlement process in their new tenancies is making it feel like 'home.' We can do this by supporting clients to decorate their tenancies therefore volunteer Painters and Decorators are needed to provide this service throughout Wigtownshire. For many who are housebound, disabled or who do not have access to equipment this is a valuable service.
